Texans Release Russell, Bring Back Salaam
December 23rd, 2009 | by Mike Kerns |
Houston brought back a familiar face today announcing the resigning of offensive tackle Ephraim Salaam. They bring him in as insurance for Rashad Butler who stepped in for the usual starter Duane Brown who left Sunday’s game against St. Louis with a sore knee. Brown has been listed as day-to-day and is being held out of practice this week. His status for this Sunday in Miami is still unknown.
Salaam, who is now 33 years young, played for the Texans for three seasons, the last being 2008. He started for two of those years and then mentored the young Duane Brown when he was named the starter in his rookie season.
He is perhaps best known for his story about discovering Texans guard Chester Pitts. The story was broadcast in a commercial during Super Bowl XLII in 2008 after winning a contest for best NFL story (The commercial can be viewed below). He also had a radio show on local sports radio in Houston during his tenure.
Whether he plays or not, Salaam is a good guy and it is nice to have him back on the team. Great guy to have for his leadership and contributions to the team.
To make room for Salaam, the team released safety Brian Russell.
