Texans Interested in Larry Johnson?

November 10th, 2009 | by Mike Kerns |

You know Head Coach Gary Kubiak has to be frustrated as hell with his running game to be considering this one.

At his presser yesterday afternoon, Coach Kubiak said of the recently released Larry Johnson “We’re going to do our homework on him just like we did our homework on Edgerrin James last week. Obviously, I think when a name like that comes on the free-agent market like today, we’ll take a look at him just like any other player. He’s been a good player in this league, and I’m sure he’ll get a lot of interest from a lot of people.’

Very cryptic, Kubes.

I say give him a shot, if he wants to come here.

Well, I do not know if this is just the rhetorical answer he was going to give just to get the question out of the way, or if they are going to try to make a real run at him. Yeah, the guy is a head case. But if he can hold onto the football, he has to be an upgrade to the running game.

I seem to be in the minority in this, as all of my fellow writing staff over at Battle Red Blog are against it and I am for it. I am tired of the thinking that the only players we can sign are the squeaky clean boy scouts. It’s okay to have a guy of “questionable character” in the locker room. Just don’t have an entire locker room of guys like that.

Sure, his production has dipped in the past few seasons in the train wreck that has become the Chiefs. But I believe he still has some tread on the tires. And I want to win. We have tried to win with nothing but good character guys. I am willing to try anything to get over the hump. If that move is bringing in a guy that can hang onto the football and punch it into the endzone on a short yardage situation, I would sign him yesterday. We let Cedric Benson get away. Don’t do it again. If Houston is on his list of teams he would go to, give him a tryout. Please.
